{{/presale}}The gold coins available from the United States Mint are not limited to those in the American Eagle and American Buffalo collections. In fact, the US Mint produces a range of collectible gold coins as part of various other collections. One such example is the First Spouses Gold Coin program. Today, you have the opportunity to collect US Mint First Spouse 1/2 oz Gold Coins from random years courtesy of Provident Metals.
Highlights:
US Mint First Spouse Gold Coins feature 24-karat gold and represent a partner collection to the $1 Presidential Medal Series. The First Spouse Collection focuses on the women who served alongside the individuals who have held the title of President of the United States of America. Only those First Spouses feature in this series whose husbands have qualified to feature in the $1 Presidential Series. As such, the First Spouse Program stops at Nancy Reagan’s release from 2016.
Obverse
For the obverse, US Mint First Spouse 1/2 oz Gold Coins feature a portrait of the woman who was First Spouse alongside her husband as President of the United States. For those Presidents who did not have a spouse while in office, an image of Liberty from American circulation currency during that presidents time in office is featured. For example, Thomas Jefferson First Spouse coins feature Turban Head Liberty from early US gold coins.
Reverse
The reverse design elements of US Mint First Spouse 1/2 oz Gold Coins includes a different design for each First Spouse. The design elements here are meant to reflect the social and cultural initiatives championed by the individual First Spouse while in office.
History
The US Mint First Spouse Program released in 2007 and offers four portraits per year. Certain release years had five coins issued to reflect presidents whose spouses died while in office and later remarried. The 2016 issue had only three coins issued as the program reached its limit at Nancy Reagan, the last First Spouse whose husband qualified for the $1 Presidential Coin Series.
