{{/presale}}In 2007, the United States Mint launched a series of 1/2 oz gold coins to honor the women who have served as First Spouses in the United States. These women served alongside the President of the United States as a leader in social causes in the United States, often adopting causes close to their hearts. The series focuses on the spouses of four presidents per date mark, with a few exceptions. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase US Mint First Spouse 1/2 oz Gold Coins in perfect condition online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The First Spouse program started in 2007 with designs representing the earliest administrations of the United States. Martha Washington, the wife of President George Washington, was featured in the first release. In the event that a president served in office as a single man, Liberty would feature on the obverse in place of a First Spouse and the president himself would be featured on the reverse.
Obverse
On the obverse of most of the coins in the US Mint First Spouse 1/2 oz Gold Coin Series is a bust of a First Spouse. For those presidents who were not married while in office, the image of Lady Liberty that featured on American denominations at the time was used instead. As an example, the Thomas Jefferson coin features the Flowing Hair Liberty design while the James Buchanan coin featured Christian Gobrechts Liberty Coronet design.
Reverse
The reverse side of US Mint First Spouse 1/2 oz Gold Coins includes either an image of the First Spouse at work in support of national and societal causes in the US, or the causes and achievements of the president. For example, the Martha Washington coin features The First Lady of the Continental Army sowing the first American flag. The reverse of the Jefferson coin features the monument that memorializes the life and achievements of Thomas Jefferson as found as its Monticello estate.
History
2016 is the last date mark available in this series as a First Spouse is not eligible for depiction in the series until the President of the United States is available for depiction in the Presidential $1 Coin series.
