The US Mints First Spouse program is a special series of 24-karat gold coins that showcase the faces and accomplishments of women who have filled the role of First Spouse alongside the President of the United States of America. A First Spouse is eligible for attention in the First Spouse Series only after the President the individual was married to is eligible for the $1 Presidential Series. The US Mint has a history of not producing images of sitting Presidents or living former Presidents on American coinage. As such, Rosalyn Carter, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, and Melania Trump are not yet eligible for the series.

Obverse

A First Spouse portrait features on the obverse of all US Mint First Spouse 1/2 oz Gold Coins. With the exception of Rosalyn Carter, all of the First Spouses through Nancy Reagan are featured in order in this series from the first President of the United States, George Washington (Martha Washington) to Ronald Reagan (Nancy Reagan). In the event a president was not married while serving in office, Lady Liberty appears on the obverse as she was featured on American gold and silver denominations of that era.

Reverse

The designs on the reverse of the US Mint First Spouse 1/2 oz Gold Coins are unique to each of the First Spouses or presidents represented in a given release. For example, Martha Washington is depicted sitting in a chair as she sows together the very first American flag for the Continental Army to carry into battle against the British.

History

While the series typically features four releases per date mark, there were some exceptions to this rule if a president was married to different women while serving in office. For example, President John Tyler was married to Letitia Tyler when he assumed the presidency, but she passed away and he remarried late in his term to Julia Tyler. As such, the 2009 series has five releases with both First Spouses of President Tyler featured.
