In the months and years following the August 2012 shootings at South Africa’s Marikana platinum mine, the world is casting an anxious eye on one of the most beautiful and historically turbulent republics in the world–along with its precious metals. Likewise, Provident Metals carries a variety of the country’s precious metal coins, including the South Africa 2 Rand Gold Coin. Each contains .2354 Troy Ounces of Pure Gold and comes to you in AU condition or better.

Introduced by the South African Mint in 1989, Two Rand Gold Coins are a legal form of tender in South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia. The obverse of each 2 Rand features the image of Jan van Riebeck, who founded South Africa’s first Dutch settlements in 1652. The coin’s reverse boasts the sprightly springbok, an African treasure that can run as fast as 60 miles per hour.

South African coinage–like the republic itself–boasts a fascinating (and sometimes bumpy) history. The nation’s mint was informally established 110 years ago by Boer statesman and president Paul Kruger.

After Great Britain invaded the country in 1910, British money became South Africa’s official form of currency and it wasn’t until 1941 that South Africa took control of its mint. The South African Mint Company was formally established half a century later and the Rand did not replace the British pound as South Africa’s official form of currency until 1961.

If you’re interested in adding gold to your portfolio–a tangible asset you can hold in your hand–pick up an Africa 2 Rand today. By utilizing our secure online ordering system, you will have access to the most cost-effective, timely shipping on the market.
