Annual Release Silver Bullion Coins

There are many popular silver coins on the market that are released on an annual basis. These coins are backed by a central government or bank for their silver content and purity. Among the most popular options available are the following:

  • American Eagle Silver Coins: These coins are the official silver bullion coins of the United States. This series is struck annually by the US Mint, with a purity of .999 pure silver, in just a 1 Troy oz weight. The obverse has always featured the iconic image of Walking Liberty by Adolph A. Weinman. From 1986 until the first half of 2021, the reverse showcased a heraldic eagle design by John Mercanti. The reverse of these coins since then have featured a flying eagle, by Emily Damstra.
  • Austrian Philharmonic Silver Coins: These coins debuted nearly 20 years after the start of the gold series. These silver coins have been issued annually since 2008. For their first five years, the series produced well over 54 million coins. These silver coins showcase the pipe organ on the obverse and the musical instruments you would see at the Musikverein on the reverse.
  • British Britannia Silver Coins: Produced annually by the Royal Mint, this coin program showcases the female personification of Great Britain, Britannia, on the reverse. Since 2012, the classic Phillip Nathan design has been seen on every release. Queen Elizabeth II was pictured on the obverse from the debut of the coin program, until 2022. In 2023, Martin Jennings’ King Charles III effigy has been featured.
  • Canadian Maple Leaf Silver Coins: Struck by the Royal Canadian Mint, these coins are among the most popular silver coins in the world. The sugar maple leaf, designed by Walter Ott, has been shown on the reverse since the gold coin program debuted back in 1979. The obverse features the reigning British monarch’s effigy. Multiple depictions of Queen Elizabeth II have been used throughout the years. In 2024, Steven Rosati’s King Charles III effigy will be used.
  • Chinese Panda Silver Coins: Chinese Panda Silver Coins are unique in that a new image of a panda is present in every year’s issue. These coins came after the success of their gold counterpart and have been regularly released as BU coins since 1989.
  • Mexican Libertad Silver Coins: Another unique option is the Mexican Libertad Silver Coin. This coin program, unlike most coins, doesn’t have a face value. The Mexican coat of arms is located on the obverse while a Winged Victory depiction can be seen on the reverse.

Perth Mint Annual Releases

The Perth Mint is unique in that they have a few different and unique annual bullion coin programs. Most of their coin programs are centered around animals that are endemic to Australia. Some popular coin programs include the following:

  • Australian Kangaroo Silver Coins: The Kangaroo series is a newer annual bullion series from the Perth Mint, debuting in 2016. However, the series was the first from the Perth Mint to have a purity of .9999 pure silver. These coins display the Red Kangaroo on the reverse with the reigning British monarch on the obverse.
  • Australian Koala Silver Coins: The Perth Mint is known for its unique images on its annual releases. Their series of koala coins features unique images of the well-known animal on the reverse of the coin. Coins have been struck annually since 2007. Coins are issued in 1 oz and 1 kilogram options and are available in proof strikes, and high-relief strikes.
  • Australian Kookaburra Silver Coins: Arguably the most well-known of the Perth Mint annual collections is the Kookaburra Silver Coin. Debuting in 1990, these coins feature new images of the bird on the reverse with every issue. Coins are available in a 1 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kilogram options.

Similar to the British Britannia Silver Coin and the Canadian Maple Leaf Silver Coin, the Perth Mint uses the reigning British monarch’s effigy on their annual bullion releases.

  • 1990-1998: Queen Elizabeth II designed by Raphael Maklouf.
  • 1999-2018: Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.
  • 2019-2023: Queen Elizabeth II designed by Jody Clark.
  • 2024-Present: King Charles III designed by Dan Thorne.

Unique Variations

While BU Coins are the most popular, there are several different types of strikes to choose from. These strikes typically have lower mintage numbers as they serve more as collector’s items.

  • Colorized: Colorized coins have a colorized lacquer applied to them to give the coin color.
  • Gilded: These coins have a thin layer of 24-karat gold on the silver coin. However, the gold is so thin it does not affect the overall weight of the coin.
  • High-Relief: These coins have details that make the coin look 3D. Blanks are struck multiple times to achieve this look.
  • Proof: Proof coins are struck at least twice, giving the background more of a mirrored look with frosted design elements.
  • Reverse Proof: These coins are similar to proofs; however, the design elements rather than the background have a mirrored look.
