History

Beginning in feudal Japan in the 12^th century, the Samurai emerged as a hereditary military nobility in Japanese society and became an officer caste. The original purpose of Samurai was to serve an individual warlord or estate owner. Samurai were employed to protect the lands of an individual landholder and even lead the private armies of these individuals if the landholder had one. By the time of the Edo peaceful period of 1603 to 1868, Samurai no longer had much purpose as warriors and became land managers instead, gaining experience and education.
