Obverse
On the obverse of the Proof South African Krugerrand Gold Coin is a bust of Paul Kruger. The left-profile bust of Kruger was first released on South African Pound gold coins in the 1890s. It was chosen as the face of the Krugerrand when it was introduced in 1967 and was last modified for these coins in 1984. The portrait of Kruger comes with inscriptions of Suid-Afrika and South Africa, with the nations name featured in both Afrikaans and English.
Reverse
The reverse field of Proof South African Krugerrand 1 oz Gold Coins depicts an image of the Springbok antelope. The national animal of the modern Republic of South Africa, the Springbok inhabits the dry plains of south and southwestern Africa, including vast stretches of the modern nation of South Africa. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include Krugerrand, Fyngoud 1 oz Fine Gold, and a date mark.
History
The first issue of South African Krugerrand Gold Coins included 1 oz gold in Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof versions. The BU coin was first issued in 1967 with 40,000 coins, with a Proof coin also issued that same year with a limit of just 10,000 coins.
