Both coins have LIBERTY and a date mark inscribed on this side, with the word inscribed on the coronet of the Liberty design.

Liberty coins have the face value as FIVE D., while the Indian coins list the face value as FIVE DOLLARS and have an inscription of E PLURIBUS UNUM.

History

Liberty Half Eagles were issued from 1838 to 1907. Indian Half Eagles were issued from 1908 to 1929 and were the last coins in the series. Liberty coins did not have the In God We Trust motto on the reverse until 1866. Indian coins were the first-ever incuse coin strikes in American history.
