{{/presale}}The San Francisco Mint became an essential part of American coin production during the mid-1800s, especially with the striking of the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle. The mint produced these coins consistently from 1854 to 1907, with only one year missing in 1886. These historic gold coins, now known as Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins with the Type II reverse, are available today at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin available here is in Extremely Fine condition, meaning the coins have slight wear on the raised elements but still retain some of their original luster. The dates of these coins range from 1866 to 1876, but the specific year of issue will be selected at random and cannot be specified.
Obverse
On the obverse of the Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coin, Lady Liberty is featured in a profile portrait, facing left. She wears a coronet with Liberty inscribed on it, and the design is surrounded by 13 stars, representing the original American colonies. Below the portrait is the coin’s year of issue. Inscriptions read LIBERTY and the date of issue.
Reverse
The reverse design on these $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins displays the Great Seal of the United States. The seal shows an eagle with a shield on its chest, holding arrows in one talon to signify war and an olive branch in the other for peace. Thirteen stars are positioned above the eagle, surrounding the national motto, In God We Trust, marking the Type II reverse design, which was produced between 1866 and 1876. Other inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TWENTY D., and the S mint mark.
History
Following the Civil War, the U.S. Mint added the national motto to coins as part of an effort to promote unity and symbolize the nations values. The Type II reverse design was used for just 10 years before being replaced by the Type III design in 1877.
