{{/presale}}In 1849, Congress authorized the introduction of two new gold coin denominations following an influx of gold into the US Treasury during and after the California Gold Rush. These new denominations included a one-dollar gold coin and a fourth denomination in the US Eagle Series, a Double Eagle. The $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin remains the largest denomination of gold coinage ever introduced for circulation in the United States. Today, you have the chance to get Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin was first struck in proof in 1849 to showcase the new denomination for the series. From 1850 to 1907, the coins were issued with the Liberty Coronet design from James B. Longacre. When the Double Eagle denomination was introduced, Longacre was serving as the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. He had already been employed at the US Mint as an Assistant Engraver and developed his version of the Liberty Head Coronet for the Double Eagle and Gold Dollar based on Christian Gobechts 1838 Liberty Head Coronet design.
Obverse
On the obverse of Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins is an effigy of Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. The portrait shows Liberty with most of her hair up in a bun while a few curly strands hang down the side of her head and neck. She wears a coronet crown on her head with Liberty inscribed on its surface. There are 13 stars around her bust with a date mark below the portrait.
Reverse
The reverse side of Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins comes with a version of the heraldic eagle of the United States based on the Great Seal of the United States. The bald eagle supports the US national shield on its chest with the arrows of war and an olive branch of peace in her talons. Rays of sunlight expand from wingtip to wingtip between the outstretched wings of the bald eagle. On coins dated 1850 to 1865, the ring of 13 stars over the eagles head forms a circle. Coins dated 1866 and later have a less-perfect circle of 13 stars with In God We Trust inscribed within.
History
Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins were introduced for commerce starting in 1850. The Liberty Coronet design was used until 1907. In late 1907, it was replaced by the famed Saint-Gaudens design that is best remembered as the greatest American coin design of the 20th century.
