The US Eagle coin series, first issued in 1794, is a cornerstone of American numismatics, featuring denominations like $10, $5, and $2.50, commonly referred to as the Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle. The $10 Gold Eagle was particularly notable for its consistent design and long production run, especially the Liberty Gold Eagle. Obverse

On the obverse of Pre-33 Liberty Eagle Gold Coins, youll find a design by Christian Gobrecht. This features a left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty, adorned with a coronet crown. The obverse is encircled by 13 stars representing the original colonies, along with a date mark at the bottom. The inscriptions here read LIBERTY and the date mark.

Reverse

The reverse of the $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin presents the heraldic eagle, a symbol of the United States. The eagle is shown with the US national shield on its chest, clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Some coins might include the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle, a design addition that began in 1866. Inscriptions on this side read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TEN D., and the national motto, depending on the date of issue.

History

Over the 70-year production of Liberty Gold Eagles, the design remained largely consistent, with just one major alteration. In late 1866, the US Mint added a banner to the reverse side, displaying the national motto In God We Trust above the eagle.
