The Liberty Head is by far the longest-used design in this series. The first $10 Eagle Gold Coins were issued by the United States with the Turban Head design from 1795 to 1804. The final design, the Indian Head design found in this two-coin set, was issued from 1907 to 1933. In between, the Liberty Head was issued for nearly 70 years from 1838 to 1907.

Obverse

On the obverse of the coins in the Pre-33 $10 Indian and Liberty Gold Eagle Two-Coin Sets are images of Liberty. The Liberty Head design, also known as the Liberty Coronet, shows a left-profile portrait of Liberty with a coronet in her hair, 13 stars around the design element, and a date mark beneath her portrait. The Indian Head design features Liberty wearing a tall, feathered headdress with an arch of 13 stars overhead and a date mark beneath the portrait.

Reverse

The reverse of the Pre-33 $10 Indian and Liberty Gold Eagle Coins feature very different images of the American bald eagle reflecting the eras in which each was designed. The Liberty Head coin features the heraldic eagle with the US national shield on its chest, as well as the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The 1838-1865 dated coins in this range lack the national motto of In God We Trust, while the 1866-1907 coins have a banner with the motto above the eagle. The reverse of the Indian Head coin features a bald eagle perched on a sheaf of arrows that is wrapped in an olive branch. Both coins have inscriptions of United States of America. The Liberty Head has the face value as Ten D, while the Indian Head has the face value as Ten Dollars. The Indian Head has E Pluribus Unum in the field.

History

The Liberty Head design, unlike the Indian Head design, was used across all four denominations of the US Eagle during its history. It was on the Quarter Eagle and Half Eagle from 1838, as well as the Double Eagle from its introduction in 1850.
