The United States has not issued a gold dollar coin in more than 130 years. From 1849 to 1889, the US used the riches of the California Gold Rush to expand its gold coin denominations to include a Double Eagle Gold Coin and a new US Gold Dollar. The gold dollar went through three designs on its obverse, with the final image used for the longest period of time in the programs history. Today, you have the chance to buy Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin Type 3s with certification online at Provident Metals.

The $1 Liberty Gold Coin was produced by the United States Mint for 50 years. During this time period, the series went through three types based on the designs that appeared on the obverse. The Type 3, as featured here, appeared on the coins for the bulk of that 50 years. It was used for 33 years from 1856 to 1889. In the first seven years, two different images of Liberty appeared on the obverse.

Obverse

For the obverse of these Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin Type 3s, you will find James B. Longacres left-profile bust of Liberty. She is shown in wearing a tall, feathered headdress with United States of America inscribed around her figure.

Reverse

In the reverse design element, the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin Type 3 comes with a depiction of a large, full wreath. It entirely surrounds the inscriptions in the center of 1 Dollar and a date mark. This is known as the Type 2 reverse design, but was used with the Type 2 and Type 3 obverse design elements.

History

James B. Longacre originally produced a Liberty design for the Type 1 release that was similar to Christian Gobrechts Liberty Coronet design on the US Eagle denominations. That was used from 1849 to 1854. Longacre replaced the design in 1854 with a smaller Liberty head wearing a feathered headdress. That Type 2 design was used for just two years and replaced in 1856 by the Type 3 design found here.
