{{/presale}}The US gold dollar coin debuted in 1849 from the United States Mint and was fueled by the discovery of gold in California in 1848. The California Gold Rush that started in 1849 filled the coffers of the US Treasury with gold and the nation introduced the US gold dollar in the immediate aftermath. The series went through three designs with the Type 1 coins issued from 1849 to 1854. Right now, you can buy Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin Type 1s online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin Type 1 in this product listing is a cleaned specimen. Cleaned coins come with varying visuals based on the efforts made to clean them. Typically, clean coins can show signs of tarnish and diminished luster.
Obverse
The obverse face of the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin Type 1s come with a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. This image was created in 1849 by US Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre. He replaced Christian Gobrecht following his death and used one of Gobrechts greatest US coin designs as inspiration for his Liberty bust on the US gold dollar. The left-profile bust depicts Liberty with the coronet crown with the words Liberty on the band. The only other marking on this face of the Type 1s is a ring of 13 stars representing the original American colonies.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin Type I is a depiction of a small wreath that encircles roughly three-quarters of the central design element. In the center of the design element is the marking of the denomination as 1 Dollar, with a date mark featured below that. United States of America is inscribed around the outer edge outside of the wreath on the design field.
History
The Type 1 US gold dollar was the only one in the series with different designers for the obverse and reverse. James B. Longacre designed the Type 1 obverse used from 1849 to 1854. Peter Filatreu Cross designed the reverse. In 1854, Longacre redesigned both images for the US Mint and was the only designer of note going forward to 1889 when the program was halted.
