The United States Mint introduced a US gold dollar coin in 1849 to accompany its US silver dollar coin. The gold dollar was the result of an influx of gold from the California Gold Rush, similar to the introduction of the $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin from the US Eagle denomination. Right now, you can buy Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins Type 3 in BU condition online at Provident Metals.

Obverse

The obverse face of the Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins Type 3 comes with the third and final Liberty design in the series. The design includes an inscription of United States of America along the top rocker with Liberty in left-profile relief. She wears a feathered headdress on her head.

Reverse

On the reverse side of Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins is an image of a large wreath with the inscriptions 1 Dollar and a date mark in the center. This design was actually redesigned in 1854 and is the Type 2 design for the reverse.

History

Pre-33 $1 Gold Coins featured three different obverse designs, all created by James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The original design replicated the famous Liberty Coronet, while Longacres Type 2 and Type 3 designs both featured Liberty with a feathered headdress. The Type 2 coin was only available from 1854 to 1856 and featured a smaller Liberty bust and headdress. The Type 3 featured a larger head and headdress. Peter Filatreu Cross created the original reverse design in 1849 and it was used until 1854. Longacre later redesigned the reverse in 1854 with a larger wreath and removed the inscription United States of America.
