With more than 40 years of history in producing gold and silver bullion, the New Zealand Mint is a privately-owned mint located in Auckland. The Niue Hawksbill, introduced as the Fiji Taku, is the most prominent series the mint has issued through the 2010s.
Obverse
On the obverse face of $2 New Zealand Niue Hawksbill Turtle 1 oz Silver Coins is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. The coins in this series have only featured one portrait of Her Majesty during the history of the series. Ian Rank-Broadleys fourth-generation effigy created in 1998 for the Royal Mint of England features on the obverse of the coins. Inscriptions include Elizabeth II, Niue, Two Dollars, and the date of issue for the respective coin.
Reverse
The reverse side of New Zealand Niue Hawksbill Turtle 1 oz Silver Coins includes the same design each year. Here, you will find the image of the hawksbill as it swims through the warm waters of the South Pacific Ocean. Native to the region, the beautiful hawksbill is known to transit between the North Island of New Zealand and Fiji for its nesting and breeding grounds. The inscriptions on this side read Turtle and Fine Silver .999 1 oz.
History
The New Zealand Mint introduced this coin series in 2010 as the Fiji Taku 1 oz Silver Coin. This continued through 2013, with the series becoming the Niue Hawksbill Turtle Silver Series in 2014. Since that time, the collection has grown to feature other weight options.
