Obverse

The obverse face of Mexican Libertad Silver Coins includes the image of Winged Victory. Known as the Angel of Independence, Victorias figure is based on the ancient goddess of victory, Nike. She was worshipped by victorious generals and celebrated by nations that succeeded in war. The Angel of Independence became a powerful symbol in Mexico during and after its revolution against Spain.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the Mexican Libertad 1 Kilo Silver Coin is a depiction of the national coat of arms. In the center of the design field, you can see the modern coat of arms complete with Estados Unidos Mexicanos inscribed above it and a wreath below. Around the edge of the design field, there are 10 historic versions of the same seal.

History

Mexican Libertad Silver bullion coins debuted in 1982 with a 1 oz option. This was the only coin available through 1990. In 1991, four fractional-ounce coins were introduced, followed by 2 oz and 5 oz coins in 1996. These Mexican Libertad 1 Kilo Silver Coins have only been available since 2008 with the highest recorded mintage coming in 2011 when 6,000 coins were sold.
