Brief History | At the time of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin's introduction, South African Kruggerands were the only pure gold bullion coins available. They were in short supply due to a boycott of South Africa because of their apartheid policies. To satisfy the high demand for gold bullion coins in light of this shortage, the Royal Canadian Mint began producing Canadian Maple Leafs only from gold mined within Canada.
