{{/presale}}The last coin the US Mint ever released into circulation with 90% silver content was the Kennedy Half Dollar. Today, that coin remains in production with the same designs from 1964. These legal tender coins now feature a cupro-nickel alloy as of 1970, a metallic composition that was standardized on other US coins in 1964. However, you can find unique, collectible JFK Half Dollar legal tender coins out there. Provident Metals currently has JFK Gold-Plated Half Dollar Coins available to you for purchase online.
Highlights:
When you purchase the JFK Gold-Plated Half Dollar Coin available in this Provident Metals listing, the coin you receive is authentic US legal tender. Each coin has been enhanced with a full 24-karat gold plating applied across the entire obverse and reverse design field. The coins are individually packaged inside of protective acrylic capsules and come with a small, round display to help the coin stand upright. All coins listed here come with a Certificate of Authenticity as well. This set features two coins in total, each with a different mint mark. One coin is a product of the Denver Mint and features a “D” mint mark, while the other is a product of the Philadephia Mint and features a “P” mint mark.
Obverse
The obverse of the JFK Gold-Plated Half Dollar Coins features a left-profile portrait of President John F. Kennedy. Just over two-and-a-half years into his first term as President of the United States of America, President Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963. By January 1964, the Treasury and the United States Mint had agreed upon a new design for the Half Dollar and had the coins available to the public by March 1964. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include Liberty, In God We Trust, and 2020.
Reverse
On the reverse side of JFK Gold-Plated Half Dollar Coins is a modified version of the US Presidential Seal. Designed by Frank Gasparro and based on the heraldic eagle, it features a front-facing bald eagle clutching the olive branch of peace and the arrows of war in its talons. The bird supports the US national shield and is surrounded by a ring of stars. The inscriptions on this face read United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, and Half Dollar.
History
Following the death of President John F. Kennedy, it was First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy who pushed for her late husbands effigy to go on the US Half Dollar. The original plan and consideration was to replace the effigy of President George Washington on the US Quarter, but Mrs. Kennedy did not wish to see her husband replace the nations first president.
