{{/presale}}Monarchs have always been celebrated in Great Britain. When a monarch reaches a milestone year on the throne, a jubilee event is held. The jubilees have different names, but very few of these jubilees have reached the same level as the Golden Jubilee. The Golden Jubilee, which marks 50 years of rule, was celebrated in 1887 for Queen Victoria I. The Great Britain Queen Victoria Jubilee Design Sovereign Coins were issued from 1887 to 1893. Right now, you can purchase these unique coins at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These coins are considered some of the most remarkable gold sovereigns available. The Royal Mint issued these coins from 1887 to 1893. Other gold sovereign coins were issued as early as 1489 during King Henry VIIs reign.
Obverse
On the obverse of each Great Britain Queen Victoria Jubilee Design Sovereign Gold Coin is the image of Queen Victoria I. In left-profile portrait, you will see the Queen in her crown and jewels. The limited-issue design was created in 1887 as a commemoration of the Golden Jubilee of Victoria I. The coin design is based on the bust created by artist Francis John Williamson.
Reverse
The reverse of these coins is the design of St. George. This image was created by Benedetto Pistrucci in 1817. It shows the saint on horseback battling a dragon. This design is generally featured on the reverse side of all gold sovereign coins, however, through the reign of Queen Victoria I, the design was replaced with a crowned shield instead.
History
Great Britain Gold Sovereigns were originally released in 1489 during the reign of King Henry VII. By 1603, James I came to power and the coins were no longer used. The original coins were more than double the size and weight of these Gold Sovereigns we know today.
Gold Sovereigns reemerged in 1817 after the Great Recoinage of 1816. The first monarch to be featured on these coins after they reemerged was King George III.
