{{/presale}}Since 1817, the Royal Mint of England has been issuing the Great Britain Gold Sovereign coins. Based on the historic English sovereign, these gold coins were initially intended for use as circulation coins. Through most of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, however, the coins have been available merely as bullion coins. Right now, you can buy Great Britain Gold 1/2 Sovereign Queen Elizabeth II coins online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
With your purchase of a Great Britain Gold 1/2 Sovereign Coin in this product listing, you receive a specimen with a protective plastic flip. The 1/2 Sovereign Coin from the Royal Mint of England has only been available during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, the current and longest-reigning monarch in English history.
Obverse
The obverse face of Great Britain Gold 1/2 Sovereigns features a bust of Queen Elizabeth II. It is possible to find one of four different effigies of the Queen present on this side of the coin. The Arnold Machin design was widely used across a variety of British denominations from 1965 to 1984 and was just the second effigy of her reign. The shortest-lived design was the Raphael Maklouf design issued from 1985 to 1997. The fourth-generation was perhaps the most widely popular design and was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley. Any coin issued 2016 and later has the Jody Clark bust of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown.
Reverse
On the reverse face of all Great Britain Gold 1/2 oz Sovereigns is the depiction of St. George. The patron saint of England, St. George is shown riding his horse into battle against a dragon and slays it with a long spear. This design was introduced back in 1817 when the gold sovereign returned to production in England and was designed by Benedetto Pistrucci.
History
The British Half Sovereign was first issued in 1817 by the Royal Mint following a major overall of British coinage. However, in 1926 it was suspended and not issued again until 1980 with the exception of a few distinctive coronation and anniversary releases.
