The Royal Mint is the United Kingdom’s sovereign producer of bullion coinage and commemorative medals. Its founding in 886 AD makes it the second-oldest mint in continuous operation in the world – second only to the Monnaie de Paris, which opened its doors in 864 AD.
Needless to say, the Royal Mint is one of the most revered producers of gold bullion coins in the precious metals community. Its signature product, the Britannia gold coin, is a popular choice for numismatists and precious metals investors, and it offers a wider variety of gold bullion coins than almost any other mint on the planet.
The Britannia is the Royal Mint’s best-known product and was the mint’s answer to the Gold Krugerrand when it debuted in 1987. Initially, it bore a composition known as crown gold, with 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper. As it happens, this composition is identical to the Krugerrand.
However, the Royal Mint soon became dissatisfied with the inclusion of copper in the mixture and replaced it with an equal portion of silver in 1990. The Britannia bore this gold-silver alloy until 2012, but had its purity upgraded to .9999 fine gold in 2013.
The image of the Britannia itself is much older than the coin. Britannia is a representation of the British Isles that traces its roots all the way back to the 1st century AD.
The image on the reverse of the modern coins features the goddess Britannia holding a shield and trident, with the British flag as the insignia of the shield. The obverse design has changed several times over the years but has always featured an image of the sitting monarch of the UK – either Queen Elizabeth II or King Charles III.
Britannias are produced in a wide variety of weight denominations and face values. You can get a gold Britannia in any one of these sizes:

As mentioned, there is a wider variety of British gold bullion coins than there are at every other major mint. Some of them rival the Britannia in terms of their popularity. Others are a bit more esoteric, but still valid and well-known to the gold investing community. You’ll find representatives from the following series:
