{{/presale}}The JFK Half Dollar coin, also known as the Kennedy Half Dollar, is the second-largest denomination of US coinage and the second-youngest. It is behind only the modern US dollar coin in both of these facets. The large blank used for the JFK Half Dollar makes the coin a popular vehicle for the creation of commemorative pieces at private mints. Today, you have the chance to buy Colorized JFK Half Dollar Coins online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The release of the JFK Half Dollar was one of the fastest turnarounds in US Mint history. President Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963. Almost immediately, there was a push to immortalize the young president on one of the nations circulating coins. After modest debate, the Franklin Half Dollar was chosen for the overhaul, with President Kennedy replacing Benjamin Franklin on the obverse and the modified presidential seal replacing the eagle and Liberty Bell on the reverse.
Obverse
On the obverse of Colorized JFK Half Dollars is a depiction of President John F. Kennedy. This left-profile relief was created in 1962 by Gilroy Roberts for the Presidential Medal Series. The inscriptions on this side of the coin include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2022.
Reverse
The reverse side of the Colorized JFK Half Dollar comes with an image of the modified presidential seal. This design was also created in 1962 by Frank Gasparro and used in the same Presidential Medal Series as the obverse bust from Roberts. This design includes a front-facing bald eagle with the US national shield on its chest, the arrows of war in one talon, and the olive branch of peace in the other. Inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOLLAR.
History
The introduction of the JFK Half Dollar design was a rapid one. Discussions began as early as November 27, 1963, to add President Kennedy to a coin. The Half Dollar was ultimately chosen as Mrs. Kennedy did not want to see President George Washington replaced on the Quarter. The existing designs from Roberts and Gasparro made it easy for the US Mint to begin production in January 1964 and release the first coins into circulation in March 1964.
Ordering
These Colorized JFK Half Dollars come with an individual acrylic capsule and a Certificate of Authenticity. The colorized layer is applied only to the reverse and features a blue background, gold colorization around the rim, and real-life colors on the eagle.
