In 2013 and 2014, coins issued by the RCM coincided with the US Congress issuing the Congressional Gold Medal to the members of the historic special operations force. Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is found on the obverse of all Canadian First Special Service Force Gold Coins. Her Majesty is shown in the 2003 right-profile bust created by Susanna Blunt. This effigy of the Queen is the fourth-generation design for Canadian coins, the second-ever from a Canadian artist, and the first during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II to depict the monarch without a crown. The last time this happened was during the reign of King George VI from 1937 to 1952.
Reverse
Known as the Devils Brigade and the Black Devils, the First Special Service Force had an easily identifiable unit badge that appears in a second rendition on the reverse of Canadian First Special Service Force 1/10 oz Gold Coins. This image includes the historic arrowhead badge design from the units shoulder patches, with USA inscribed horizontally above the word Canada. There are emblems on either side representing Canada and the United States. Along the bottom are English and French inscriptions of First Special Service Force and Premiere Force de Service Special.
History
The First Special Service Force was organized in 1942 as a joint American-Canadian commando unit that trained at Fort William Henry Harrison outside of Helena, Montana, USA. The force four in Italy and southern France in the European theater, and contributed to the defense of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska.
