Reverse
On the reverse side of 1 oz British Platinum Coins there is a depiction of Britannia. Designed by Philip Nathan, this iconic image features Britannia with a Corinthian helmet and flowing robes. In her right hand, she holds her trident, while in her left there is a shield decorated with the Union Jack flag. In the background, youll find a radial pattern that adds anti-counterfeit protection. Youll also find along the rim inscriptions reading PLATINUM BRITANNIA 1 OZ 999.5.
History
While Britannia is a modern symbol of British strength and integrity, her origin doesnt quite have the patriotic zeal one might expect. Britannia was actually a product of the Roman conquest of the British Isles that began in 43 AD. Rome literally named the conquered land Britannia and created a female personification of the land inspired by the goddess Minerva. It wasnt until the early modern period during the reign of Elizabeth II that Britannia became a symbol for England.
