The United States Mint introduced the American Eagle Platinum Coins in 1997. The series initially featured 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz platinum coins when it debuted, but all four were suspended in 2008. When the series eventually resumed, the fractional-ounce coins were no longer available.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the American Eagle 1 oz Platinum Coin is an image of the Statue of Liberty. Designed in 1997 by John Mercanti, this image features a front-facing view of Libertys face with her stoic gaze.

Reverse

The reverse face of American Eagle Platinum Coins includes a depiction of an American bald eagle. In this design from Thomas D. Rogers, the American bald eagle is shown gliding in flight over the nation as the sun rises in the distant background.

History

Resumption of the American Eagle Platinum Coin Series was not smooth. While the Proof American Eagle Platinum coin also saw its fractional-ounce versions suspended starting in 2009, its 1 oz platinum coin continued on each year through to the present. However, the American Eagle 1 oz Platinum BU coin was not issued from 2009 to 2013. It was released in 2014, only to be halted again in 2015. Since 2016, it has been issued annually once again.

Ordering

These American Eagle 1 oz Platinum Coins are available to you in Mint State 69 condition. Coins with this grade have full, original mint luster and no more than two minor detracting flaws. Examples of those flaws include only minuscule contact marks or hairlines outside the primary focal points of the coin.
