{{/presale}}Designed by mint chief sculptor-engraver John R. Sinnock, the obverse features a profile view of Benjamin Franklin. The portrait is based on an 18th century bust by sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon. Franklin was an American printer, scientist, inventor, and diplomat.
The reverse showcases the Liberty Bell, based on a sketch by John Frederick Lewis. It represents the city of Philadelphia and the birth of the nation.
Early American coinage depicted figures from symbolism and allegory, like Lady Liberty for example. In 1948, American coinage faced a significant change when coins started depicting actual Americans instead. The artistic “golden era” had come to an end as history replaced imagery at the US Mint.
