Designs

The imagery across these Goldbacks showcases Arizonas development from its early days to the modern era. After the Gadsden Purchase of 1854, an influx of miners, ranchers, and settlers arrived, transforming the landscape. Discoveries of gold, silver, and copper fueled economic growth in towns such as Tombstone, Bisbee, and Jerome, while the arrival of railroads in the 1880s linked these frontier settlements to the rest of the country.

History

The Arizona Goldback Series pays tribute to the states diverse past, from indigenous cultures through its development into a U.S. state. When Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, Arizona became part of Mexicos northern frontiera distant, sparsely populated area where towns like Tubac struggled with Apache conflicts and minimal support from Mexico City. The Mexican-American War and the Gadsden Purchase of 1854 brought the region into U.S. territory. Over time, Arizona shed its reputation for lawlessness, and on February 14, 1912, it officially became the last of the contiguous states to join the Union.
