{{/presale}}Charles E. Barber ended up with his name eternally associated with three of the primary denominations of US currency as a last resort, as it were. The US Mint commissioned artists to provide new designs for the dime, quarter, and half dollar in 1891. Frustrated by the result of the designs provided, the Mint simply asked Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber to come up with new designs for the coins. Today, Barber Coins remain a popular product among investors for the 90% silver content each one contains. Right now, you can get a $500 (USD) Face Value lot of 90% Silver Barber Half Dollars online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Our purchase of a $500 Face Value bag of 90% Silver Barber Half Dollars includes a total of 250 US half dollar coins from the Barber Coinage program. The date marks available for this run from 1892 to 1916. All coins are in average circulated condition with common signs of wear and tear as a result of use in circulation. You should expect to see a wide range of date marks from the time period these coins were struck inside of your bag of Barber Half Dollars.
Obverse
The obverse face of the 90% Silver Barber Half Dollars includes the right-profile portrait of Liberty. Designed in a Greco-Roman style, Liberty has masculine features with a crown wreath and cap on her head. In God We Trust is inscribed above, 13 stars are on either side, and the date mark is below.
Reverse
On the reverse of 90% Silver Barber Half Dollars is an image of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Also designed by Barber, this image features the eagle with the US national shield on its chest and a ribbon in its beak that reads E Pluribus Unum. The bird clutches the olive branch of peace and arrows of war. Around the outer edge, United States of America and Half Dollar are inscribed.
History
Barbers Half Dollar design was eventually replaced in 1916 by one of the most famous coin designs in American history: Walking Liberty. The latter design went on to feature on the Half Dollar for 31 years, compared to 24 years for the Barber Coinage.
