{{/presale}}Beginning in the 1970s, there was a massive uptick in the production of gold bullion aimed at private investors. On January 1, 1975, it was once again legal for Americans to own gold coins, gold bullion, and gold certificates after the federal government had blocked gold hoarding through executive action during the administration of President Franklin Roosevelt in 1933. One of the first major private refiners in the United States was the Engelhard Corporation. Though it is now closed down, Engelhard bars are still prominent in the precious metals industry. Today, you have the chance to buy 50 Gram Gold Bars from Engelhard online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
One of the more classic means of producing a gold bar is through the casting process. Gold is melted to its liquid state and then poured into prefabricated molds. Cast loaf bars are a simple, affordable means of producing gold bars for investors that, as a result of the simple process, have a much lower premium than more complex minted ingots. The shape of the bar, with its flat top to the obverse that tapers to a rounded edge and a flat reverse field, resembles that of a loaf of bread.
Obverse
For the obverse design of 50 Gram Gold Bars, you will find the Engelhard Corporation logo along with other identifying markers. The Engelhard logo consists of a rectangle with the word Engelhard stamped into the center. Above this logo are the markings of the weight and purity as 1.608, indicating its weight in Troy ounces rather than the 50 Grams marked here, and the purity of 999.9. Some of these bars may have a serial number. If so, it is stamped below the Engelhard logo.
Reverse
Cast loaf bars such as these 50 Gram Gold Bars from Engelhard are typically left blank. All cast bars have some type of texture or visual element on the sides and reverse. As the gold settles into the mold during the cooling process, it is common for striations and other textures to form on the bar naturally.
History
Engelhard Corporation was founded in Iselin, New Jersey, in 1902 by Charles W. Engelhard Sr. In 1903, he founded the American Platinum Works and acquired a number of other companies to fold into this new business, including his 1904 acquisition of Baker & Co., a platinum smelting and refining business. Well known for the production of gold, silver, and platinum bullion bars beginning in the 1970s, Engelhard is also credited with the development of the first catalytic converter.
