The Aztec sun stone has been a vital piece of Mexica culture for more nearly 500 years now. First carved as early as 1502, the sun stone was buried by the Mexica when Tenochtitlan fell to the invading Spanish conquistadors and not rediscovered until December 1790. Today, it hangs in the halls of the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City. Provident Metals happily offers the 5 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Bar as a new piece in your collection.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with individual protective plastic flips or tubes of 10 bars!
  • Impressive depiction of the sun stone!
  • Contains 5 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • Cuauhtemoc, the final Aztec emperor, is shown on the obverse.
  • The rings of the Aztec sun stone are featured on the reverse.

Your purchase of a 5 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Bar will ship inside of an individual protective plastic flip when you order just one bar. For multiples up to 10 bars, the products will ship inside of a mint tube. All individual silver bars in this listing come in brand-new condition.

Obverse

Cuauhtemoc was a warrior and leader of the Aztec Empire in its final days. Chosen by the elders of the Mexica to lead the empire and the city of Tenochtitlan in 1520 after the death of Moctezuma II, Cuauhtemoc ruled for one year and was captured by the Spanish as he tried to lead his family and elders out of the city when the conquistadors sacked Tenochtitlan in August 1521. His portrait is featured in left-profile relief on this side of the 5 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Bar along with inscriptions of Five Troy Ounces, Cuauhtemoc, and .999 Fine Silver.

Reverse

The Aztec sun stone and its four ornate circular rings are showcased on the reverse of the 5 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Bar. The central disk is the most important piece of the sun stone as it bears a depiction of the solar god Tonatiuh. The four block sections immediately around the portrait represent past eras of the Mexica, while the three outer rings help decipher the time, day, and year in the solar cycle of the Mexica calendar.

History

As the conquistadors of Spain sacked the city of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec sun stone was buried in the Zocalo, what is now the main square of Mexico City. There it laid beneath the surface until December 1790 when renovations were being completed on the Mexico City Cathedral. At first, it was hung from the exterior wall of the Cathedral until 1885. Today, it is housed in a museum to keep it safe.
