{{/presale}}The $5 Indian Half Eagle displays a Native American chief wearing an ornate feather headdress. Surrounding this portrait are thirteen stars (intended to represent the original 13 colonies), along with the coin’s date and the word “LIBERTY.” Exactly like the reverse, the coin’s obverse is engraved in an incuse format. This means that the design details are recessed or sunken in an intaglio style.
The reverse’s focal point features an eagle sitting on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch in its talons. The country of origin, the legend “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the coin’s denomination of $5 US dollars, and the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are placed around the bird. Just like the obverse, the reverse features incused design elements.
Owing to its beautiful design and unique format, the $5 Indian is one of America’s most iconic and popular coins. Along with the $2.50 Indian Quarter Eagle, which shares a similar motif, it is one of two incuse coins in the history of the U.S. Mint. It was designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, a protege of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who admired the famous sculptor’s creativity. Much like the $10 Indian and $20 “Saint,” Pratt aimed to make the $5 Indian a truly unusual coin unlike any other in American history.
The coin’s highly unusual design was controversial at first, as some believe that dirt and grime could become lodged inside the coin’s recesses. Merchants also complained that the coin was difficult to count, sort, and stack. Nonetheless, the general public admired the coin’s appearance. It has become a wildly popular collectible and one of the most in-demand vintage U.S. gold coins.
These $5 Indian Half Eagles are in Almost Uncirculated condition, which means that they display only the slightest signs of use or wear. Also known as “AU,” this grade is perfect for those who want to own a coin that appears Uncirculated without the higher price tag. Many of the coins being offered today are “near miss” specimens that are extremely close to being Mint State.
