{{/presale}}One of the longest-running coin designs in American history is the Roosevelt Dime. Introduced in 1946 following the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in office during his fourth term as President of the United States in 1945, the Roosevelt Dime joins the Washington Quarter and Kennedy Half Dollar as previous silver coins that are now issued in cupro-nickel instead. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase a $5 Face Value Tube of 90% Silver Roosevelt Dimes online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
President Franklin D. Roosevelt is notable in American history for a number of reasons. First and foremost, he was the first and only president in American history to buck the trend set by President George Washington of voluntarily stepping away from office after two consecutive terms. President Roosevelt served four consecutive terms in office through the Great Depression and World War II, dying shortly after being sworn in for his fourth term in 1945.
Obverse
On the obverse face of the 90% Silver Roosevelt Dimes, you will find a left-profile portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This effigy of the president was created in 1946 by John R. Sinnock and still features to this day on the circulation US dime.
Reverse
The reverse field of the 90% Silver Roosevelt Dimes includes a slight variation visually from the previous design element of the Mercury Dime. The Roman fasces has been replaced in this design by a single torch in the center. The olive branch is no longer wrapped around the item, but rather, is placed to one side of the torch while an oak branch is on the other side of the torch. Sinnock was also responsible for the design on this side of the dime.
History
Prior to 1964, all US circulation silver coins had 90% silver content with a balance of 10% copper. The Roosevelt Dime design was the last one to feature 90% silver content in this particular denomination. Starting in 1965, Roosevelt Dimes switched to the new cupro-nickel alloy along with the Washington Quarter.
