The DCAM designation, meaning deep-cameo, refers to the strong visual contrast between the frosted design features and the reflective background surfaces.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 2026-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coin, you will find the classic image of Lady Liberty. She is shown moving forward, holding a torch and an olive branch. The rising sun in the background adds depth and represents growth and the nations continued progress. The inscriptions include LIBERTY, 1776-2026, and the W mint mark.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2026-W Proof Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin displays a detailed image of the American bald eagle. This design replaced the earlier nest scene used from 1986 to 2021. The modern version focuses on the eagles head, showing fine feather detail and a composed expression that reflects strength and vigilance. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 10 DOLLARS, and 1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD.

History

The Lady Liberty design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens remains one of the most recognized images in American coin history. His work on the $20 Double Eagle came after President Theodore Roosevelt pushed for improvements in U.S. coin design. Starting in 1905, Saint-Gaudens used elements inspired by ancient Greek coins to create a design that continues to be used and appreciated today.
