Released in 2006, the American Buffalo Gold Proof Coin marked the first time the United States Mint produced a 24-karat gold proof coin. It is offered as the collector edition of the American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coin. Proof coins are made through a detailed minting process where each blank is individually prepared and struck multiple times. This results in frosted design elements set against a polished background, giving the coin a crisp and balanced look. Currently, 2026-W Proof American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coins are available from Provident Metals.

  • Arrives in a capsule with a presentation box, outer shipper, and a Certificate of Authenticity!

Obverse

The obverse of the 2026-W Proof American Buffalo Gold Coin displays a right-facing portrait of an Indigenous figure. The design was originally created by James Earle Fraser for use on the 1913 Buffalo Nickel. Fraser combined features from three different Indigenous individuals to create this well-known portrait. The inscriptions here include LIBERTY, 1776-2026, Fraser’s F initial, and the W mint mark.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2026-W Proof Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coin, the American bison is shown in left-profile. This design, also by Fraser, was inspired by Black Diamond, a bison that lived at the Central Park Zoo in the early 1900s. The image shows the animal grazing naturally on a small mound. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, $50, and 1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.

History

In 2026, the US Mint celebrates Americas 250th anniversary alongside other important milestones. The American Eagle Series reaches its 40th year for both gold and silver coins, while the Gold Buffalo Series marks 20 years since its debut.
