{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The Santa Maria is best known as the flagship Christopher Columbus sailed during his 1492 journey across the Atlantic, though she was also the biggest and slowest of the three ships in his fleet. This release marks the first ship featured in a new collection called Legends of the Seas. True to its title, the series will highlight famous vessels from maritime history. Now, 2026 Proof Colorized Cook Islands Legends of the Seas Santa Maria 1 oz Silver Coins are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
All 2026 Proof Colorized Cook Islands Legends of the Seas Santa Maria 1 oz Silver Coins in this offering come in presentation window boxes. Each coin has proof finish visuals, featuring frosted elements set against mirrored fields. On the reverse, the crosses on the sails include selective red colorization, giving the design added contrast without overwhelming the scene.
Obverse
On the obverse of 2026 Proof Colorized Cook Islands Legends of the Seas Santa Maria Silver Coin, you will see King Charles III in left-profile relief. His portrait is shown without a crown, offering a clean, modern look. This is one of the first-generation effigies of Charles III and was created by Dan Thorne. The inscriptions here include LEGENDS OF THE SEAS, 5 DOLLARS, CHARLES III, and COOK ISLANDS.
Reverse
The reverse of 2026 Proof Colorized Legends of the Seas Santa Maria 1 oz Silver Coins shows a portrait of Christopher Columbus beside the Santa Maria as it sails across open waters. The ships journey ended on Christmas Eve 1492 when she ran aground on a coral reef near what is now Haiti. With no way to save the vessel, Columbus ordered the usable timbers taken to build La Navidad, often noted as the first Spanish settlement in the New World. Inscriptions here include SANTA MARIA, 2026, and 1492 COLUMBUS DISCOVERS THE NEW WORLD.
History
The vessel was first known as La Gallega, a name tied to her Galician background, and she was built as a carrack-style ship. Historical estimates place her at roughly 62 feet long with a displacement of about 100 tons. Columbus was said to prefer the smaller, easier-handling Nia, and he only sailed with the Santa Maria because her owner, Juan de la Cosa, joined the voyage as master. About 40 men crewed the ship on the expedition that would go on to shape world history.
