{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}First released in 1986, the Australian Nugget series from The Perth Mint introduced Australia to the global gold bullion marketplace. The debut came during a period of expanding interest in gold ownership worldwide. Early coins in the program highlighted well-known gold nuggets discovered across Australia. In 1989, the reverse design transitioned to the Australian Kangaroo, giving the series a new visual direction. For 2026, The Perth Mint celebrates the 40th anniversary of the collection with proof coins that revisit the original nugget theme. The 2026 Proof Australian 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget 1 oz Gold Coins are now available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2026 Proof Australian 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget 1 oz Gold Coin is housed in a plastic capsule for protection. The coin is presented in a black Perth Mint box and shipped in a themed outer package. A Certificate of Authenticity from The Perth Mint accompanies every purchase.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2026 Proof Australian 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget Gold Coins features King Charles III. Created by Dan Thorne, the portrait shows the King in left-profile relief without a crown. This design continues the contemporary tradition seen on Australian coinage. The inscriptions include CHARLES III, AUSTRALIA, and 100 DOLLARS.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2026 Proof 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget 1 oz Gold Coins brings back Stuart Devlins Welcome Stranger artwork. The Welcome Stranger nugget, found in Victoria in February 1869 by John Deason and Richard Oates, remains the largest gold nugget ever recorded. The design carefully captures the nuggets surface details, along with radial lines and a subtle map of Australia behind it. The inscriptions read ONE OUNCE, 999 PURE GOLD, 2026, and THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET.
History
The original concept behind the series was rooted in Australias gold rush period. By featuring actual gold nuggets that were historically recorded, The Perth Mint connected the bullion series to meaningful discoveries from the nineteenth century. These nuggets symbolized more than wealth; they reflected the determination of the miners who searched Australias goldfields in hopes of striking it rich.
