{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}In 1986, The Perth Mint introduced the Australian Nugget Series as the nations official gold bullion coin program. The coins were originally designed to honor some of Australias most remarkable gold nugget discoveries. A few years later, in 1989, the reverse design transitioned to the kangaroo, and the series adopted the Australian Kangaroo name. In celebration of the programs 40th anniversary, The Perth Mint reintroduces the original reverse design for 2026. Right now, 2026 Proof Australian 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget 1/4 oz Gold Coins are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2026 Proof Australian 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget 1/4 oz Gold Coin comes packaged on its own. It is sealed in a protective capsule and presented in a black Perth Mint display box. A themed outer shipper and Certificate of Authenticity are included with your purchase. This presentation option is limited to 500 coins.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2026 Proof Australian 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget Gold Coin shows King Charles III in left-profile relief. Designed by Dan Thorne, this portrait presents the King without a crown and marks his first-generation appearance on Australian coinage. Inscriptions include CHARLES III, AUSTRALIA, and 25 DOLLARS.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2026 Proof 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget 1/4 oz Gold Coin features Stuart Devlins original depiction of the Welcome Stranger nugget. Discovered in Victoria in 1869 by John Deason and Richard Oates, the Welcome Stranger remains the largest gold nugget ever found. The design captures its distinct shape, enhanced by radial lines and a subtle outline of the Australian continent. Inscriptions read 1/4 OUNCE, 9999 PURE GOLD, 2026, and THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET.
History
During the first three years of the series, from 1986 to 1988, the reverse designs featured well-known Australian gold nuggets. These included the Welcome Stranger, the Welcome Nugget, and the Hand of Faith. The detailed engravings focused on the natural texture and appearance of these finds, creating a strong link to Australias gold mining heritage.
