Obverse
On the obverse of the 2026 Proof Australian 175th Anniversary of Australia’s First Gold Rush Gold Coin is the effigy of King Charles III. The portrait shows the King in left-profile relief without a crown, matching the style used on current Australian coinage. This design was created by Dan Thorne and serves as the first official effigy of the King for Australian coins. The inscription includes CHARLES III, AUSTRALIA, 1 OZ 9999 AU, and 100 DOLLARS.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2026 Proof 175th Anniversary of Australia’s First Gold Rush 1 oz Gold Coin features imagery connected to the gold mining era. The design includes items such as wheelbarrows, tents, and gold pans arranged across the field. At the center is a 175th-anniversary emblem with crossed mining tools over the outline of Australia, with the number 175 marking the milestone. The inscriptions reads AUSTRALIA’S FIRST GOLD RUSH, 175, and 2026.
History
In 1851, news of gold discovered near Bathurst spread quickly and drew large numbers of people to New South Wales. Soon after, even richer finds were reported in Victoria, bringing an even larger influx of prospectors. People traveled from across Australia and overseas, including Britain, China, the United States, and Europe, hoping to find success. These events rapidly transformed quiet regions into busy mining camps.
