The Czech Mint introduced its bullion coin program in 2017 with the launch of the Silver Czech Lion. The series quickly gained attention for its national theme and limited production numbers. Obverse

The obverse of the 2026 Niue Czech Lion Silver Coin shows a portrait of King Charles III. As Niue is a Commonwealth nation, its coins display the reigning British monarch. This left-facing portrait was created by Jody Clark, who also designed the final effigy of Queen Elizabeth II used on British coinage. Inscriptions include CHARLES III, NIUE, 2 DOLLARS, and 2026.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2026 Czech Lion 1 oz Silver Coin, the design features a powerful Czech lion with a forked tail and the Crown of St. Wenceslas. This crown was created in 1346 by Charles IV for his coronation as King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor. Dedicated to St. Wenceslas, it became the official crown used for future coronations in the region. Inscriptions read CESKA REPUBLIKA, 1 OZ, and AG 999.

History

The Czech lion traces its origins to the 12th century, when Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa granted King Vladislaus II a new coat of arms. The design featured a silver lion on a red shield to represent bravery and strength, originally depicted with one tail. According to tradition, a second tail was later added to honor King Pemysl Otakar I for his support during conflicts with the Saxons. By the 13th century, the two-tailed lion became the official symbol of the Kingdom of Bohemia and remains an important national emblem today.
