The Perth Mint produced a maximum of just 20,000 coins in this release and the mintage has already sold out at the mint. The design of the horse on the reverse includes onyx colorization that adds visual contrast to the coin.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2026 Colorized Australian Lunar Horse Gold Coin features the portrait of King Charles III. This effigy debuted on Australian coins in 2024 and was created by artist Dan Thorne. The design shows His Majesty in left-profile relief and notably without a crown. The inscriptions include CHARLES III, AUSTRALIA, 1/10 OZ 9999 AU, and 15 DOLLARS.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2026 Colorized Lunar Horse 1/10 oz Gold Coin, the design presents a powerful horse rising onto its hind legs. The animal is enhanced with onyx colorization, while the background includes grassy terrain beneath the horse and a mountain peak rising in the distance. The Perth Mints P mint mark also appears within the design. The inscriptions read HORSE, 2026, the P mint mark, and the Chinese emblem for the horse.
History
Within the Chinese zodiac cycle, the Horse is associated with independence, strength, and enthusiasm. The Year of the Fire Horse is especially notable because it occurs only when the Horse year aligns with the Fire element in the sixty-year lunar cycle. This pairing is believed to strengthen the already bold characteristics of the Horse sign.
