Obverse

The obverse of the 2026 British Loch Ness Monster Gold Coin features King Charles III. His portrait appears in left-profile relief and was created by Martin Jennings. Introduced in 2022, this effigy represents the first official coinage portrait of Charles III and shows the King without a crown. The inscriptions here include CHARLES III, DG REX FD, and 100 POUNDS.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2026 Loch Ness Monster 1 oz Gold Coin, the design depicts the legendary creature rising from the loch. Nessie is commonly imagined as a large animal with a long neck and small head. The background highlights the expansive setting of Loch Ness, which stretches more than 23 miles and reaches depths exceeding 750 feet, reinforcing its connection to tales of mystery. Inscriptions here include LOCH NESS MONSTER, 1 OZ, 999.9, FINE GOLD, and 2026.

History

Modern interest in the Loch Ness Monster largely dates back to May 2, 1933, when the Inverness Courier published an account from local residents John and Aldie Mackay. They reported seeing a large disturbance in the waters of Loch Ness, a deep freshwater lake in the Scottish Highlands. The lakes dark waters and frequent mist have helped sustain stories of a hidden creature for decades.
