{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}First released in 1987, the Britannia bullion series is one of The Royal Mints well-known coin collections. Alongside the classic Gold Sovereign, Britannia coins hold a special place in the mints history. The series began with the Gold Britannia, which was issued in several sizes in its debut year. Today, the 2026 British Britannia 1/2 oz Gold Coin can be purchased online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These 2026 British Britannia 1/2 oz Gold Coins are in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Coins are available individually in protective pouches or in sealed sheets of 20. The reverse carries multiple security features, including micro-engraved text, a latent image, intricate tincture lines on the Union Jack, and a motion texture wave pattern.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2026 British Britannia Gold Coin features the portrait of King Charles III. Created by Martin Jennings in 2022, this image marks the first time the King has appeared on British coins. The design shows him in left-profile relief without a crown, in line with current official portrait standards. Inscriptions include CHARLES III, DG REX FD, and 50 POUNDS.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2026 Britannia 1/2 oz Gold Coin, Britannia stands as a symbol of the United Kingdom. This design, introduced by Philip Nathan in 1987, depicts her on a rocky shore holding a trident in one hand and an olive branch in the other. At her side rests a shield with the Union Jack, and she wears a Corinthian helmet. Inscriptions read BRITANNIA, 2026, 1/2 OZ, and 999.9 FINE GOLD.
History
Britannias earliest coin appearance came in 1672 during the reign of Charles II. That design portrayed her with flowing robes, a plumed helmet, and drapery inspired by Roman goddesses. In the 18th century, especially under George III, her look became more neoclassical, with simplified lines and more balanced composition. The helmets style changed over time, and the trident and shield became stronger symbols of Britains naval and national identity.
