Obverse

The obverse of the 2026 American Buffalo Gold Coin shows a right-facing image of an indigenous figure. Fraser developed this portrait in 1913 by combining the features of three Native American men from the early 1900s into one composite design. The inscriptions include LIBERTY, 2026, and Fraser’s F initial.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2026 Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coin features a left-facing American bison. Fraser based this artwork on a bison named Black Diamond, who lived in the Central Park Zoo in New York during the early 20th century. The animal is shown grazing on a small rise with its head lowered. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, $50, and 1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.

History

The American Gold Buffalo was introduced in 2006, bringing back the classic artwork of the 1913 Buffalo Nickel by James Earle Fraser. The first years mintage of 337,012 coins was the highest in the series until 2021, when 350,500 coins were sold. This record was surpassed again in 2022 with sales totaling 410,000 coins.
