Design
This design mimics a modern baseball in both look and structure. Todays baseballs are crafted with a small rubber core, wrapped in black rubber and tightly spun with over 360 yards of wool and cotton yarn. Two pieces of white cowhide are sewn together with 108 red stitches to complete the ball. These raised seams affect how the ball travels through the air, and theyre carefully captured in this silver coin. The design also includes the required hallmarks and the Samoan coat of arms.
History
In baseballs early years, rubber-centered balls were wrapped in yarn and leather. Since there was no official standard, performance on the field could be unpredictable, leading to frequent updates to the rules. That changed in 1876 when the National League introduced specifications for size and weightrules that still hold today.
