Obverse

The obverse of the 2025 Pitcairn Islands Ocean Wonders Whale Gold Coin presents King Charles III in a left-profile view without a crown. This portrait is from the first official series of effigies and was designed by Glyn Davies. The inscriptions read CHARLES III, PITCAIRN ISLANDS, 5 DOLLARS, and 2025.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2025 Ocean Wonders Whale 1 oz Gold Coin features a blue whale swimming in the Pacific Ocean. Blue whales inhabit all major oceans in both hemispheres and are most often found in deep waters. They migrate seasonally to move between feeding and breeding grounds.

History

The waters near the Pitcairn Islands in the South Pacific sometimes host blue whales during their migrations. These islands lie along the routes traveled by Southern Hemisphere blue whales moving between their feeding grounds in Antarctica and breeding areas farther north. The deep waters in this remote area are nutrient-rich, making them a suitable environment for these massive marine animals.
