Obverse
The obverse side of the 2025 Pitcairn Islands Ocean Wonders Octopus Gold Coin includes a left-facing portrait of King Charles III. Designed by artist Glyn Davies, this uncrowned image of the King is one of the first official portraits released following his rise to the throne. The inscriptions include CHARLES III, PITCAIRN ISLANDS, FIVE DOLLARS, and 2025.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2025 Ocean Wonders Octopus 1 oz Gold Coin, youll find an image of an octopus in a natural, sweeping pose with its limbs stretched outward in the surrounding ocean. These animals are important to the local ecosystem, acting both as hunters and a food source for other marine life.
History
Octopuses living around the Pitcairn Islands follow standard reproductive behaviors found in tropical Pacific species. Females lay eggs in sheltered locations like under coral or inside crevices, generally during the warmer parts of the year. Because the islands are geographically isolated, octopuses in this area may have developed distinctive genetic markers, though they remain closely related to neighboring reef species. Male octopuses show off with color shifts and arm displays to court females.
