The HMS Bounty was a small merchant vessel purchased by the Royal Navy in 1787 to carry out a special mission: to gather breadfruit plants from Tahiti and transport them to the West Indies. Under the leadership of Lieutenant William Bligh, the ship was converted for its botanical purpose and set sail from England in December 1787 with a crew of 46 men. The HMS Bounty would eventually become one of the most famous ships in history. Right now, 2025 Pitcairn Islands Bounty 1 oz Silver Coins are available from Provident Metals.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2025 Pitcairn Islands Bounty Silver Coin features a first-generation effigy of King Charles III. This portrait of His Majesty shows him in left-profile relief, without a crown, and was created by Jody Clark. The inscriptions read CHARLES III, PITCAIRN ISLANDS, ONE DOLLAR, and 2025.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2025 Bounty 1 oz Silver Coin shows the HMS Bounty. Originally named the Bethia, the ship was renamed when it was acquired by the Royal Navy. It was a typical merchant ship of the era, measuring only 91 feet in length. Inscriptions here read HMS BOUNTY and .999 AG 1 OZ.

History

The famous mutiny on the HMS Bounty took place on April 28, 1789, when Fletcher Christian and 25 crew members took control of the ship from Lieutenant William Bligh. After months spent in the tropical climate of Tahiti, the crew became accustomed to the relaxed lifestyle and found Blighs strict naval rules increasingly hard to follow.
