On the obverse of the 2025 Colorized Native America the Beautiful Rhode Island Silver Coin, a Niantic woman is featured as she tends to the Three Sisters crops. Corn, beans, and squash formed the foundation of farming practices for many native groups in North America. When grown together, each crop played a role: corn offered structure for beans to climb, beans improved soil nutrients, and squash leaves covered the earth to conserve moisture and deter weeds. The inscriptions include MANISSES, RHODE ISLAND, 2025, and NIANTIC.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2025 Colorized NATB Rhode Island 1 oz Silver Coin shows an American bald eagle. This repeating design in the series frames the eagle within an eight-pointed star, with arrowheads placed between each outer point. The inscriptions read NATIVE AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL, 1 OUNCE, ONE DOLLAR, 999 AG, and MESA GRANDE SOVEREIGN NATION.
History
The Eastern Niantic inhabited parts of present-day southern Rhode Island, particularly around Charlestown and Westerly. Their lands included rivers, forested areas, and coastline that provided important food sources through hunting, fishing, and gathering. Block Island, which the Niantic called Manisses, was part of their traditional territory. It was used seasonally for canoe trips to hunt seabirds and collect marine resources.
