{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The lion has held a prominent place in British heraldry since the 12th century, introduced through the influence of the Plantagenets and broader European heraldic customs from the time of the Crusades. In 2025, The Royal Mint honors this long-standing national symbol with the debut of a new bullion series. Now available from Provident Metals, the 2025 British The British Lion 1 oz Silver Coin marks the first release in this collection.
Highlights:
These 2025 British The British Lion 1 oz Silver Coins are struck in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Each coin is packaged in a plastic flip, with larger quantities shipping in tubes of 25 or boxes of 500. The Royal Mint has added a modern surface animation to the background of the reverse to enhance security and reflect the Union Flag.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 2025 British The British Lion Silver Coin, youll see a portrait of His Majesty King Charles III. Created by Martin Jennings in 2022, this left-profile relief image is the first depiction of King Charles III to appear on British coins. He is shown without a crown. Inscriptions include CHARLES III, D G REX F D, and 2 POUNDS.
Reverse
The reverse of 2025 The British Lion 1 oz Silver Coins features a powerful lion seated with its body angled to the left. Its mouth is open as if roaring, and its right front paw rests on a shield. Designed by David Lawrence, the scene is set against a background with new Union Flag surface animation. Inscriptions read LEO BRITANNICVS, 1 OZ 999, 2025, and FINE SILVER.
History
Although King Richard I, or Richard the Lionheart, is often associated with heraldic lions thanks to his use of the three lions symbol during his reign from 11891199, earlier figures like King Henry I (11001135) were also connected to the image. Known as the Lion of Justice, Henry I was even rumored to keep lions among other exotic animals in Oxfordshire.
